Wood Bowls by Mabel Johnson

Bronze Sculpture by Linda Stewart

"I was first introduced to bowl turning when my husband, Grant, and our family moved to King Hill, Idaho in 1967. There I met a man who turned bowls out of gnarled wood and roots. Ever since that time I have wanted to turn bowls.

We were ranching and raising a family and it left little time for hobbies. I did sew for the family, made quilts, knitted, made afghans, had a floral shop for which I did ceramics.

In 2001 my husband got sick and we moved to North Powder, Oregon to be closer to our oldest daughter.

In 2004 our neighbor let me use his lathe. Now I was really hooked. I made a few “conventional” bowls with flat top. But something kept pushing me to do them different. I started learning the natural top using the “wildest” woods I could find. My daughter-in-law called it “Mabel’s Wild Wood”. Since then it has been a great source of relaxation for me.

We have recently moved to Homedale, Idaho and already have the lathe set up.

Its never too late to start a new hobby. We have 2 daughters, 1 son, 3 grand children, and 1 great grand son."
